The artist was born on December 4, 1950, in the village of Puhăceni in Moldova. He studied at the Ilya Repin Republican Art College in Chișinău. After graduating in 1970, he moved to Kyiv.

Settling in the Ukrainian capital, Mungiu enrolled at the Kyiv Art Institute within the Faculty of Art History and Theory, graduating in 1979. Mihail spent 17 years in Kyiv. During this period, he built a diverse career as a research associate at the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine and the "Sophia of Kyiv" National Reserve, as well as serving as an art critic for the Union of Artists.

Mihail Mungiu’s Art Style

The artist’s works are created in the realist style. In his practice, Mihail Mungiu celebrates old Chișinău, landscapes of his native region, as well as scenes from Bulgaria, Turkey, and other countries. He works in various types of landscapes—natural, panoramic, lyrical, rural, urban, and more.

His expressive techniques are diverse: despite being a mature master, he boldly experiments with perspective, impasto, and other methods.

According to art critic Elena Mustace, the artwork of Mihail Mungiu is characterized by atmosphere and color-tone variability, achieved through a diverse chromatic palette often based on the harmony of bright and muted, pure and subdued shades. His painting style is also distinguished by texture and a lightness of execution in a characteristic plein-air manner.

Some of his works, notable for expressive forms, vibrant colors, and interplay of light, are reminiscent of the painterly techniques of Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.
