Yurii Pikul is a renowned and highly accomplished Ukrainian artist. His body of work includes an extensive collection of paintings.
Summary of Yurii Pikul
The foundation of Yurii Pikul's art practice lies in painting and its interpretation within the context of contemporary art. Currently, the artist lives and works in Kyiv.
Biography of Yurii Pikul
The artist was born in 1983 in Kyiv. From the age of 15, he developed a passion for photography and attended photo clubs in Kyiv. At the age of 18, he started painting. He received his practical education in the workshop of the artist Yurii Sorokoletov and at preparatory courses in drawing and painting at the National Academy of Visual Arts and Architecture. He obtained his theoretical education independently.
From 2003 to 2006, together with the artist Dmytro Kornienko, they explored the grassroots social and cultural situation, consciously exhibiting works at the Andriyivsky Uzviz in Kyiv, attempting to alter the perception of the possibilities of representation in the conditions of spontaneous urban space. In 2005, he enrolled at the aforementioned Academy but voluntarily left after completing the first semester of his first year.
In 2006, he began cooperation with the TSEKH Gallery, and since 2007 - personal projects in Kyiv galleries. The artwork of Yurii Pikul has been featured in many group and solo exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad.
Yurii Pikul’s Famous Paintings: Celebrating Art
Pikul’s interests in painting, combined with his stylistic explorations and experiments with form, color, and the reinterpretation of image semantics, defines his distinctive creative approach. He is inspired by the legacy of his predecessors but reimagines their influence through his unique perspective.
Among Yurii Pikul’s original paintings are “Modern Art Research Institute” (2021), “The Back of the Unknown” (2021), and “A Bed” (2021). Many of Pikul's paintings are dedicated to Ukrainian landscapes, such as “Fields” (2018), “Bushes near Borzna” (2018), and “A Poplar near the Route” (2017), among others. These and many more of Yurii Pikul’s paintings for sale are available at auction on the UFDA website.
Yurii Pikul’s Art Style
The artist specializes in figurative painting. However, he initially worked in the style of cubism before becoming intrigued by American minimalism. In his paintings, he applied logic and the principles of combinatorics, creating works where geometry and linear structures adhered to combinatorial rules. He applied this same technique when painting landscapes.
As mentioned in an article by Your Art, in recent years, Yurii Pikul has increasingly turned to everyday, prosaic, and non-aesthetic objects. In one case, he captures buildings "improved" by unauthorized additions and renovations. In another, he depicts a bouquet of wilted lilacs and unwashed dishes. In these works, the central theme of Pikul’s art reappears: reflections on the place and role of painting in the contemporary world.
