The work of Illia Todurkin is inseparably linked to the self-founded group SRZ (named after the Ship Repair Plant in Odesa, Ukraine, where the group of artists created a squat and a unique community based on the idea of "coexistence", which had traits of a sect, a family, or a mystical union, as described by the artist Nikita Kadan). The core of their representation was a complete detachment from the struggle for power in the cultural environment and a total avoidance of competitive relationships. Instead, the participants of this artistic movement were united by the attempt to simply "be", to exist in their natural vulnerability, integrating this into the specific technique of creating works, their plots, and images.
The fragile half-shadow creatures in Illia Todurkin's works are often deconstructed and exhibit visible signs of amputations and unions. In the work "Bulimia", a creature attempts to eat itself. These sensations arose in the artist as a result of helplessness in the destructive manifestations and threatening dangers brought by war, which repeatedly chased him throughout his life. He is originally from the Russian-occupied Mariupol, from where he moved to Odesa, and then to the relatively safer Lviv, where he continued his practice alongside other members of SRZ (subsequently creating new phases of the group’s existence — SRZ-2, SRZ-3, and SRZ-4, moving across Ukraine together).
The delicate contours in Todurkin's graphic works contribute to seeing the narrative as if in a phantom dream. However, the plot would define this dream as one filled with nightmares, which the artist experiences quite often.
