The Bykivnia graves are the largest burial site for victims of mass Soviet political repression in Ukraine in 1937-1941. The Bykivnia graves were discovered by Ukrainian dissident artists in the 1970s, but the memorial plaques were installed by the relatives of the victims themselves over the following decades. Yeremieieva's works are inspired by images of trees with photos and names of individual victims. In her works, the victims of repression take on a new life in the woods of the Bykivnia forest. The body of a tree becomes the human flesh.

Yeriemieieva's series rethinks the practice of commemoration, which is growing in significance in today's Ukraine. People who became trees deals with the collective trauma of the Ukrainian people, with the memory of a tragedy that we want to forget. However, this memory continues to live on in artistic performance.
