Dovbushivka

Vasyl Mahalias — painter, graphic artist, researcher of drawing theory, and author of numerous educational materials.

He is a professor at the Department of Drawing at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (NAFAA). In 2009, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine. Vasyl Mahalias’s paintings have been featured in various exhibitions from 1984 to the present day.

The artist was born in 1949 in the village of Lehedzyne, Cherkasy region. In 1984, Vhe graduated from the Kyiv State Art Institute, where he studied in the creative workshop of Viktor Puzyrkov.

Following his graduation, the artist remained at his alma mater to work. From 1995 to 2000, he served as the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Restoration. Between 2006 and 2011, he held the position of Acting Head of the Department of Drawing.

He was honored with the Silver Medal from the Academy of Arts of Ukraine in 2007. In 2015, he received the academic title of Professor.

Scientific and methodical work holds a special place in the artist’s career. He is the author of several educational manuals, as well as numerous scientific articles focusing on drawing theory, plastic anatomy, and teaching methodology.

He has participated in all-Ukrainian and international art exhibitions since 1984 and is a regular participant in scientific conferences and forums on art education. The artwork of Vasyl Mahalias was showcased at solo exhibitions in Cherkasy (2007), Kyiv (2009), and his home village of Lehedzyne (2010).

Among Vasyl Mahalias’s original paintings are: "At the Crossing" (1984), "Masters of the Earth" (1985), and a cycle of Dnieper and Carpathian landscapes, including "Harvest Soon," "My Native Land," and "Uman Lakes" (1999). The artist's versatility is showcased in his graphic series, most notably "Rusanivska Embankment" (1999–2006) and "Secrets of the Forest" (2011).

UFDA has digitized his 1987 work "Dovbushivka," which is held in the collection of the Regional Communal Museum of Local History in Borshchiv. This painting is now available for viewing on the fund’s website.

Additionally, the works of Vasyl Mahalias are preserved in the Ternopil and Smila Art Museums.

Easily the heart of his work, Vasyl Mahalias’s artistic output is dominated by easel painting—including narrative canvases, portraits, and still lifes—but above all, the landscapes of Ukraine.

His artistic style is characterized by an organic blend of realistic tradition with expressive and modern explorations.
